Biography
Paul is a Canadian fine art painter who has focused on the dog as his painting subject for nearly twenty years. He briefly studied fine arts at York University before dropping out and embarking on his journey of becoming a self taught artist. He choose dogs as his primary subject for his paintings after visiting a dog show in the late eighties and taking a series of photographs. Those photographs were like a urban-Darwinian moment, these creatures had every shape, size, and colour imaginable and they walked amongst us. Since then, Paul's mission has been to explore the fascination we have with domestic animals and their unique relationship with mankind in today's society. In 2002 after participating in art showings in Toronto, he began to take commission orders. Things took off and his gallery quality animal portraits are now in private collections across Canada and in the U.S. in New York, Chicago, L.A, and as far away as Bermuda. His original signature style has attracted the attention of the media, art collectors, dog lovers, and design aficionados alike.

Paul is also a drummer
Statement
My work seeks to not paint dogs in the traditional sense, but to try something new and fresh. My primary motivation has been the symbiotic relationship between dog and man. My career has been built upon the observations of the emotion people feel when interacting with dogs. The emotional reaction between people and dogs appeared to me to be in a category of their own. A dog can somehow bring balance, focus, perspective, humor, and a deeper meaning into our lives. My paintings attempt to capture the emotional impact that domestic animals have on us. Animals give us the chance to practice being more nurturing and compassionate. Through the use of colour balance, pose, and composition the paintings attempt to create a hit of emotion. The purpose of my work has been to challenge our preconceptions of traditional animal portraits. A subject that is interesting to the artist personally is the only subject that is worth painting. To create my paintings, I work from photographs the dog owner provides or I do a photo shoot. The photo chosen has to capture the essence of that dog in the owners and artist's opinion. I let the emotions of the subject influence my colour choices and how the background takes form around the subject. For my commission work the owner of the animal is offered the choice to participate by suggesting colours or style preferences. I then spend a long time preparing sketches and studies on the computer. The portrait is complete when the colours and composition compliment the energy of the dog. Just as in any human portrait, the eyes can reveal a lot about that person. The same goes for a dog, their eyes staring at us engage the viewer, telling us everything that words cannot express.
My dog... Noah. We adopted him from the Project Jessie rescue shelter.
